#11 – Anne Baker

Position:  Wing
Hometown:
Redondo Beach, CA
Occupation:  Data Clerk

Ask any Chillie who the hardest working player on the ice is, and you’ll get the same answer: Anne “Frosty” Baker.  Covered in glitter and ice shavings, Frosty gives 110% every shift, every game.  New to the sport, she visibly improves every game, whether skating out with the Chill, playing goal for her in-house team, or playing roller hockey with the guys.  Her teammates are constantly heard commenting on her lack of fear, which has actually landed her in the emergency room several times in her short career.  But she always bounces back, and with her cheerful laugh and personal catch-phrase (“gotta sparkle, gotta shine”), she inspires her team by her example, game after game.

Alternate Captain, Treasurer, and Webmaster

Patty comes to the Chill from American hockey mecca Michigan, via LAChill.org.  A finance professor, Patty says she loves the game because “you have to be smart to play.”  Between work, family, tennis lessons and coaching volleyball, Patty also finds time to help out with numerous Chill administrative tasks, and has quickly become an indispensable member of the team.

#5 – Katheryn Friend

Position: Forward/Defense
Hometown: Redondo Beach, CA
Occupation: Mechanical Integration and Test Engineering Manager
Shoots: Right

Katheryn is a Southern California girl who started playing hockey in her late 20's.  She started with roller in 1990 and soon switched to ice (too hard to do both).  She convinced her husband to give it a try as well and they both played in a local co-ed league. Katheryn also played with a traveling women's team called the California Mustangs.   After the birth of her daughter in 1997, Katheryn switched to playing in women's leagues, first in Anaheim and then in El Segundo when it started up.  Her first trip with the Chill was to Alaska in 2005.  Katheryn likes to go to the far-away tournaments.

 #55 - Susan Johnson

Position:  Wing
Hometown:
Los Angeles, CA
Occupation: Nurse
Shoots:  Right

The Chill’s “Backhand Queen,” “S.J.” or “Mom” is one of those players who can always be counted on to be in the right spot for a shot or pass.  She’s a great penalty killer, using her awesome backhand to flip the puck out, over and away from oncoming forwards.  As a registered nurse, she’s amazingly handy to have on the bench or in the locker room, and she’s a calming voice of reason in the midst of what can sometimes be chaotic tournament planning.  Along with her grown son, she works to pass her knowledge on to mite-level players (6-8 year-olds), and feels that the best way to give back to a sport you love is to instill that love in children.

#68 - Coeli Jones

Position:  Defense
Hometown:
Santa Monica, CA
Occupation: Public Relations
Shoots: Right

Advisory Board Member and Points Chair

Since taking up the sport in 1994, Coeli has become such an accomplished student of the game that she plays on both women’s and co-ed teams, has coached youth hockey, and can out-strategize even the over-confident brother of an NHL great (just ask anyone in the bar that night!)  Currently at D, Coeli is also proficient at wing and can support the team with skilled and solid play wherever she’s needed - including lending her literary talent to promoting The Chill.  Constantly pushing to improve, Coeli has endured many injuries in pursuit of the perfect play, including a broken ankle, torn knee ligament, and back spasms.

#13 - Shari Latta

Position:  Center
Hometown:
Malibu, CA
Occupation: Pre-School Director / Lifeguard
Shoots:  Right

Captain and President of the Board of Directors

Perhaps the most colorful member of the team, Shari Latta is a real-life California stereotype, except for the fact that she is a hockey-playing fool. A pre-school director and lifeguard, Shari spends her free time running, swimming, and racing kayaks. Her day is not complete if it does not involve some form of physical exertion, and she can always be counted on to have a supply of yogurt, fresh fruit, and whole-grain bagels at every tournament. Rising at dawn, even after a long night of celebrating a victory, Shari accomplishes more in a single day than most people do in a week. Perhaps this is why she’s a great center - she can skate her heart out shift after shift without ever slowing down or giving in.

#17 - Lisa Lewis

Position:  Defense
Hometown:
Santa Paula, CA
Occupation: Financial Advisor

Lisa started playing hockey about 3 years ago with the Lady Kings league at Toyota Sports Center.  She started out playing left wing and gradually learned to play defense by subbing in at the position when one of the regulars was out.  She moved to the position more permanently when teammate and fellow Chillie, Coeli Jones, moved back east.  Her first tournament with the Chill was the trip to Syndey, Nova Scotia in March of 2006 where a great time was had by all!

#3 - Sherry Lopata

Position:  Wing
Hometown:
West Hills, CA
Occupation: Data Base Administrator
Shoots:  Right

Sherry is an all-round athlete who surfs and runs on the weekends.   She also spends her free time hiking, weight training, spinning, and taking cardio-kickboxing classes, so her family finds nothing unusual about her love of hockey.  A real grinder on the ice, Sherry was once described by her coach as “having flames coming out behind her.”  The past team treasurer, she is a great organizer and handles many additional chores on The Chill, including T-shirt designs, newsletter printing, and candy sales.  She is admired by her teammates for her upfront personality and personal motivation.

Occupation: Special Ed Teacher

Carylann is a special ed teacher who plays on three hockey teams other than The Chill - two men’s ice teams and one women’s roller team.  Truly dedicated, she drives over 50 miles to attend practices.   Although she is often dwarfed by the opposition’s defense, she is quick and agile on the ice, scoring a team-high three goals in the 1998 Vancouver tournament.  Popular and enthusiastic, she can always be counted on to plan a party or karaoke outing.  She says her parents are her #1 fans, and can’t wait for the formation of a WNHL.

Occupation: Paralegal
Shoots:  Right

Team Historian

One of the “Scandinavian D,” Amy cites the steady, smart, and skillful play of Finn Jari Kurri as her hockey inspiration.  Although she wishes she’d discovered hockey earlier, she has made the most of her time on the ice.  As a reliable stay-at-home defenseperson, she has awesome poke-checking skills, and can always be counted upon to be in the right spot when she’s needed.  She cherishes the photo taken at the end of her first tournament, right after The Chill came from behind to steal the championship in overtime from an “unbeatable” team:  “I’ve never seen a collection of bigger smiles,” she says; “including my own.”

Position:  Wing
Hometown:

Occupation: Physician Relations Coordinator
Shoots:  Right

Sports didn't play a huge role in Kathryn's youth - and no one in her family ever played hockey.  But, inspired by the LA Kings ("my home boyz"), Kat started learning to skate and play about eight years ago and she hasn't looked back. Since improving her skills is a top priority, Kat currently plays on the Chill and two other women's teams so she can log plenty of ice time.  Despite citing getting her body to do what needs to be done as the hardest part of playing hockey, Kat has proved she can adjust to playing defense when needed as well tearing it up at center and wing.  And she can do it all on the roller rink too!

Position: Wing
Hometown:
Santa Monica, CA
Occupation: Party Planner
Shoots:  Right

One of the newer members of the Chill, Laurel is also one of the feistiest.  After getting into a few scuffles, and serving a number of penalty minutes in her first tournament, the coach said he was thrilled to finally have “an enforcer” on the team.  Her rough-and-tumble style of play comes from playing five years of beach roller hockey, and hanging out with the pros.  Laurel is not all fire and venom, however.  A wedding planner by trade, Laurel arranged to marry not only a fellow hockey player, but to marry him on the ice.  And when she’s not skating with one of the four or five teams she plays on every season, she and her new hubby can be found mountain biking, racing snowboards, water skiing, or coaching the newest member of their “team” – baby daughter Siena.

#66 – Kathy Turner

Position:  Wing
Hometown:
Hawthorne, CA
Occupation:  Registered Dental Assistant
Shoots:  Right

USC Team Liaison

Kathy, a roller hockey convert, was discovered by the Chill in a local women’s league.  A hard-working forward with a nose for the net, Kathy scores most of her goals from the crease, holding her ground against the other team’s D and netminder.  A mother of two, Kathy saw a sign advertising women’s roller hockey, and with no experience and no training launched her hockey career.  Nicknamed “the Bone” by her teammates (something to do with a dog, a magazine and a locker room), Kathy consistently skates a minimum of three days a week, both on the ice and the floor, and hopes to someday coach youth hockey.

When asked what she likes best about hockey, “Krazy” says “There is absolutely NOTHING that compares to the all-out, full-body experience of playing hockey.  Making a fantastic play gives me a thrill that I can recall months or even years after it happens.”   Karen, who traveled to sunny California to be an actress, is the only member of the team to have actually played the dreaded “field hockey” that all Angelenos have heard about but never seen.  She’s also the team’s most devout environmentalist, carrying empty cans and bottles home from tournaments in her luggage to make sure they get recycled.
